I have taken this week off work to get my house finished, ready to rent out. I am still hoping to go with the idea of a home stay for crafters or artists but thought I'd rent it out in the mean time. The council are still deliberating over whether I need to complete a planning application or not.....

This is the main bedroom from the real estate pics before I bought the house.

This is the lino that was under the carpet.

The light fell apart in my hands when I took it down.

This is the room now, empty and ready to rent.

I do still need to find a light fitting....

and I never got around to putting in built-ins.

So, more fence painting today...... Pics of the fence tomorrow maybe?

I love cats. I have two. I recently moved them into the granny flat behind my partners house, where I now live. He doesn't love cats.

We have had two attacks from feral cats. At my house there were lots of strays but they were gentle and stayed away from my cats. The feral cats only come out at night and appear to be after my cats and not their food, which is scary. We have tried a possum trap but only caught a blue tongue lizard.

So, at the moment I have to lock my cats in before it gets dark.

Resolutions for 2012? Do I even dare go there?

My reduced list for 2011 was:

Set up a vege garden
Consider fostering again
Make more and buy less in 2011
Save money
Work on my health and fitness

I didn't really achieve any of those but I did:

Start a new job (Aug)
Almost finish my house renovations
Start a masters degree (in Nov)
Bond with my partner's 9 year old son (the small boy)
Love spending time with my nieces and the rest of my family
Decide that painting (art, not houses) wasn't for me, I'll stick to sewing and printing
Grow to love Yass even more
Have a great holiday in Vietnam
Lost weight even before I started the 12WBT- not sure why - didn't exercise.....

So maybe these in 2012 for a start.....

Use what I learnt during the 12 week body transformation (12WBT) to lose a few more kilos
Take advantage of renting my house out to save money and reduce my mortgage
Make more things - create (or finish) something each week challenge?
Be more adventurous with cooking - small boy and teenage girl want to learn how to cook
Save for a US trip in 2013
Use the public library more

Trying to get an essay done this week as well as being icky. It is due tomorrow but it would be so nice to finish it today so I can have a relax day before I go back to work (time to introspect and think).

Of course all of a sudden house cleaning seems particularly attractive (and blogging)... I packed the Christmas decos away last night (except the tinsel on the moose) and cleaned the small boy's room out - leaving a pile of stuff for him to sort. He and his Dad went camping last night so I had peace for half of yesterday, all last night and until they return today. Nice to get the house back in order, even if only for 24 hours.

I love this service but can't decide what colour....

New family member

My Boxing Day sales purchase. Not planned but I fell in love.

He has been checking out the furniture. He lives in a hutch outside but comes in for a bit of exercise each day.

I have a cold now, so have spent the past two days laying around and taking medicine. Hoping I get better soon so I can finish painting my fence and mow the lawn. I need to get some study done too - next assignment due soon....

I would really love one of these. It is a birdhouse from here I was actually looking for a mid century style letter box for Mr Bloggs for Christmas and can't find one anywhere. Maybe I should get some woodworking tools and make one?

Not much blogging lately. I sold my camera and am waiting to get hold of a new Olympus. I am dying to get photos of my garden and my new picket fence!!

I had a garage sale at my place yesterday. There were a few on locally, so lots of 'regulars' chatting to each other and comparing notes on other garage sales, familiar faces and interesting chats. I even had a big bin of fabric from my stash for sale, I only sold about 20 pieces but feel a bit lighter in the sewing room area now. It is an interesting thing having people poke through your things and offer you $2 for that dish rack you spent $50 on at Howard's Storage World only 4 weeks ago. You really have to let go and just be glad things are going to a good home and will be used by someone. It was a warm day and I even got a little sun burnt.

These are photos of plants and flowers at my new home. Most are in pots as the landscaping has to be done here yet. A very different style of house from my little cottage and the plants will have to match.

I love my garden at this time of the year. It is really only the second spring I have spent in the house and the garden has taken a while to come to life. It just makes it harder to rent it out and let go.....

The roses are all about to bloom and I can't wait. Hopefully my pruning will pay off.

These plants are all out the front as the cottage has a small front edged garden and two square bits of lawn. It doesn't look great in winter, most of these plants die right back.

Out the back I am trying to plant natives and other plants that don't need a lot of care and are attractive all year round. Work in progress.....

Lino print class

I have signed up to do a lino print class in November at Megalo Print Studio in Canberra. I can't wait, but I am now looking for inspiration.

I have been collecting some images of other people's lovely lino prints here on Pinterest.

This is my last effort, made at home last Christmas.

I did a class in North Sydney years ago and a screen printing course in Melbourne a few years ago. I love prints.

New stuff

This is our new bedhead. I will have to buy new linen but I am quite happy with it. Made by Bednest.

Our caravan is back! It has had the metal work underneath (tow bar and stabilisers) replaced or strengthened and has been to the auto electrician so now the brake lights work.

Next is woodwork, it needs a bit of sealing and fixing and then a new coat of paint. We are thinking mint green and cream.

Inside the caravan. When we get it back next time I can start on the interior. New seats and beds, new curtains, paint and a good clean! So exciting.

Melbourne shopping morning

I tend to do the same things, visit the same places and shops and buy the same items each time I stay in Melbourne city. Usually a book, a coffee, some Haigh's chocolate, note books etc. Treats.

I have been good and haven't bought many, if any books, music or magazines this year. Today I reversed all of my good work. BUT I have been saving money since I changed jobs, so.....

Books from Book Grocer Elizabeth St. $10 or $12 each.

CD's from Basement Discs, in the Lane where I had coffee. Style Council, Covers and Leonard Cohen covers.

Then on to MagNation on Elizabeth St......

I used to buy these magazines in my late teens, early twenties when I was sewing clothes a lot. I love them, European style. There are some nice patterns in here I want to use.....

and more Crafty, handmade goodness (for inspiration, you see). Guilty pleasures.

Advice needed

This is the house that I have almost finished renovating (new picket fence going up at the moment). As I am moving in with my partner I have been tossing up whether to sell or rent it. I don't know if I can give my project and my little cottage up to strangers yet......

This week, I had an idea. Maybe I could rent the house as a kind of home-stay. My idea was to aim at crafters and sewers, a sort of creative retreat in the country (sort of). I will have to apply to council of course and look at regulations, insurance etc, in the mean time, I would love your thoughts.....

More info: could sleep 4 (sharing rooms), new kitchen, sewing and craft room, bathroom, close to shops and restaurants, magazines, books, craft books, craft kits or BYO projects.

About Yass: 50 minute drive from Canberra (galleries, Floriade, Canberra Handmade market), local wineries and restaurants, op shops, second hand shops, cafes).

Would you take a holiday like this (a crafty friends weekend or with family)?
What would you expect or like to have in the house (bath, enclosed garden, sewing machines)?
Any other ideas, advice, thoughts??

4 weeks into my job and loving it and the warm weather!

Have pretty much moved into Mr Bloggs house now. Just the cats and some furniture left at my house. I am planning a garage sale in a few weekends. I still have some repairs to finish off and then I can rent my place out and relocate the cats to our new home.

The house is a 1960's beauty so am enjoying 'decorating' cheaply from op shops etc. I am back in Melbourne in Oct for another conference so may be able to meet up with Susan, my crafty, op shop loving "Sew it Together" friend for some shopping.

Spring !!

I recently started a new job. I have made the move from libraries to knowledge management. I have moved from a large organisation to a very small one.

Why? One of the values of my new organisation is 'reduce world poverty'. I love that, it is more aligned to my personal values and I hope that working there will give me a greater sense of 'making a difference'.

It is closer to home and to my nieces, brother, sister in law and my parents.

I will be learning new skills, meeting new people and broadening my horizons. I had been in my current job for almost 5 years with a few role changes in that time. I have been in libraries for 11 years and libraries are changing!

Weekend Sewing

I made these pyjama pants from the Weekend Sewing book. They are a M but are a bit fitted around the hips - not the ideal baggy pj pants, maybe I should've gone for an L? Anyway, I think they'll be ok. I didn't put elastic in the waist band, instead I made two button holes and threaded a ribbon through as a tie. The fabric was expensive, from the local fabric shop, almost $50. I could've bought a pyjama set from target for $30 probably, or bought cheaper flannel from Lincraft.

I like supporting local shops and I learnt a great tip from the shop owner. Instead of using tracing paper to cut out a pattern, she uses non-fusable interfacing. It is really cheap, easy to trace onto and is strong so the pattern can be used over and over. Great tip.

Now I can focus on my cross stitch.....

I finally finished my rug! A week later than I planned but great that it is done and can now keep me warm!

I finally had my fireplace surround attached to the wall. Now I have to paint it, seal the chimney, paint the inside of the fireplace and I found an old decorative grate to sit in there.

Asylum seekers

Something has been on my mind for the past few days.

Like many others, I have been watching the SBS series Go Back to Where You Came From.

Thank you SBS for this show, I just hope those who need to see it do. The fact sheets on the SBS web site are great. I for one would be willing to share our open spaces and freedom with the relatively low number (compared to those arriving in other countries) of refugees who are lucky enough to arrive safely on our shores.

I didn't want to vent BUT - had the participants on the show never watched the news stories or read about wars, genocide and hunger around the world? Why did it take this trip to consider the refugees in detention centres as people fleeing from such horrors? Are we really so ignorant or is it just easier to believe the media hype around 'queue jumpers' 'illegals' etc?

Anyway, I will be doing some background reading, then I am going to write some letters or e-mails. If you want to do something to, details of where to start here on the Pocket Carnival blog and at UNHCR.

Reading other blogs and a glance at the discussion on the SBS site, I am not the only one who was affected by this show:

I also watched this documentary on SBS this week - John Pilger - The war you don't see. With the US pulling out of Iraq you have to wonder why we were all there, the level of dis/mis(?)information from governments around the world is scary!

My nanna blanket is slowly growing. I am almost out of wool, so I think I'll finish it soon, it could go on forever.... I definitely need it on my lap in the evening now to keep me warm. I will set a target to get it done and the ends sewn in this weekend!

Temple of embroidery

In Hue, Vietnam we stumbled across a hidden gem, through an arch off a main street. It appears that embroidery is a highly regarded skill in Vietnam and this group of buildings include a temple to the embroidery master. I have never seen such amazingly delicate silk embroidery, I was tempted to buy one and I am not big on embroidery.

It was night so the photos don't do them justice.

This one was 3D.

It was an oasis in a busy city after a long hot, slightly stressful day on our holiday and nice to see this art given so much respect.

Rockin' weekend

What a wonderful weekend! Surrounded by creative, passionate people; an open fire, steamed pork ribs, live music and laughs, all in our own home.

We hosted a pin-striping weekend at Moose Lodge. Bikes, helmets, old bowling pins all got the treatment. Amazing to watch the free hand accuracy of the lines and the creativity in the designs and colours chosen.

This weekend made me realise how great it would be to be able to do something you love and to share it with others. Whether it be making music, creating art, crafting, cooking, working on cars, motorbikes or bicycles .......

Ooooh it's cold

Unfortunately since I have been back from Vietnam I have had a tummy bug and now a bad cold, as well as some difficulty in fitting back into my normal routine. I am hoping this is due to the cold weather and being ill. All weekend has been spent in doors in front of the heater drinking Lemsip, crocheting, watching bad tele (why did I give in and get an aerial?), reading, catching up with internet stuff and sleeping. So much for that bit of gardening and general home maintenance I had planned :-(

I have lost a few kilos (you have to focus on the positives) and of course I did find some things to covet while catching up with blogs. A subscription to Mid Century Magazine and these stamps. Sorry I can't remember which blogs I found these on. Maybe I will treat myself for my birthday. I am looking forward to celebrating with my family and friends, if I can organise something at short notice for the long weekend.

I haven't done very well with my resolution to stop buying myself things this year, however I have improved. I don't believe I have bought any fabric this year and I haven't spent as much as usual on clothes, books and magazines. It is part of a long process, changing habits, thinking before I buy, using alternatives, avoiding temptation and resisting that 'I want that' urge. I now have a clearer idea of what I really want to spend my money on and am trying to focus on simple pleasures.

Back from our Vietnam trip last week. Fantastic.

Before we went the autumn colours in Canberra and surrounds were just emerging. Now it is winter and we have noticed the difference in the countryside on the drive between home and Canberra. It also felt like construction work that we regularly pass in Canberra has gone up overnight and that it is much colder than usual.

My garden is a disaster, dead grass, dead tomato plants ..... This weekend will be spent pruning, digging and tidying the garden. The Vietnamese make use of all spare land and it is sad to see all of my back garden so bare. The stray cats made themselves at home while my cats were at my parents, so I have to clean up all of their mess from the grass also (strays don't bother to dig holes or cover it up :-(

Anyway nice to be home. I guess........

Autumn sun

What a gorgeous day! It has been getting colder and colder, here near Canberra, especially in the late evening and mornings. Today was sunny and warm though, I got loads of washing done and dried on the line, mowed the lawn and tidied up the garden. I also packed away my summer clothes (hardly wore some of them as it was so mild), except for the clothes I will take to Vietnam. My winter clothes are unpacked and ready to go - hello boots and skirts! I have two large bags for the charity bin - I love that feeling, a good clean out!

This was the scene a couple of Sunday mornings ago - banana bread. Yum! Tomorrow we are making caramel slice. Not exactly healthy I know but we don't do it regularly.

These are from my garden too - a Christmas 2009 gift plant. Flourishing without any tending or watering (perfect).

Any idea what these are? A friend bought the plants for me, they flowered for months then died. I pulled them up and just recently more plants have sprung up - they must self seed. Pretty!

We had a look in many, many retro/vintage furniture stores, markets and op shops. We are looking for a 1960's sofa/lounge. Everything is so expensive! The idea for me is to find something pre-loved that I can give a new home and for less money than a new item. It doesn't seem possible anymore, eBay, op shops, 'retro' stores - so over priced! I think the smaller country towns are the only place to find something special.

We found the best light for $1350, we didn't buy it! We did buy a print of a girl with a cat for $45 at the Chapel St Bazaar (not worth that at all) but we loved it. We found two gorgeous vintage plastic handles for $5 in an 'antique' shop in Chiltern. They will go in the new bathroom when it goes in and I got some lovely vintage buttons from the same shop.

Imelda May was fantastic and the Victoria Hotel on Little Collins St was a good find.

Last weekend. Family and friends at my house and having fun in the park across the road!

Planning the Vietnam trip. Getting things done around the house.

Today - Happy International Women's Day. It was interesting talking to people at work; in Russia, many women get flowers and the day is a big deal, in China women get the day off and in Burma they are banned from protesting.

How lucky we are in Australia and thanks to the women who fought for the rights we have now. I went to an event at Parliament House, amazingly smart and funny women sharing their thoughts and experiences.

Next weekend - road trip to Melbourne to see Imelda May with my love.

I got this beautiful original light from a local heritage furniture store. I regularly lust after their light fittings and furniture (lots of art deco). This is my living room ceiling.

I may be moving out of my little 1920's, renovation project cottage soon and renting it out. I think I'll have to take this down and store it? I love it so much.

In the most exciting news - I am booking our flights to Vietnam tomorrow. 3 weeks to explore the country. Can't wait!

This is my lovely EK Holden. Bought last year and have only just got around to cleaning it up. It has been for a few drives in Canberra and around my little town.

It has the original rego papers from 1961, it would be fun to track down the first owner. I guess all EKs will be having their 50th birthdays this year and next year.

I have to say it is difficult not having power steering - especially in Canberra car parks.

I do love the bench seats, the smell of the upholstery and the wind-down windows.

I am grateful for the cooler weather today after a longish hot spell.

It is silly to complain of the heat, when so many Australians are struggling with extreme weather conditions of different kinds.

I was glad to be able to mow the lawn and clean the house today though.

I may need to:

Unsubscribe from numerous fabric and other online shop's blogs and newsletters
Avoid eBay, Etsy and Fishpond
Make my lunch more often and reduce coffee purchases
Make gifts from my existing fabric stash
Get the bus to work more often
Cook more

Other potential benefits:

More space at home
Improved health
More creative achievements
Save the money for a holiday before I take the holiday
A working budget?

Unfortunately my year is off to a bad start. My cat knocked a mug onto my laptop which now has a 3 inch wide verticle black line in the middle of the screen, Fishpond had a sale (doh!) and I have a DJ's voucher to spend (good excuse to buy something of twice it's value).

Maybe I shouldn't replace my laptop, then I'd save money, have more time to make things and would have less temptation for cute things from the blogworld? Nah!

Christmas 2010

It has been a busy few days filled with family get togethers on a grand scale (compared to recent years). With my sister in law and two nieces living here now and my partner's two children staying with us for the school holidays it has been lovely having children around at Christmas.

I got my nieces this little pool and it ended up being warm on Christmas day and is getting hotter. With so much rain and cold weather in the first month of summer we expected a cold Christmas break. Tomorrow is going to be 35 degrees. Maybe a day to stay indoors and sew?

We cleared the rest of my old kitchen and some other junk from my garden today and took a big load to the tip. Yes, my OLD kitchen has gone. Christmas came early for me:

1. A new kitchen installed (a separate post to come with before and afters) on Wed 22nd Dec
2. Collection and registration of the EK Holden I bought a while back (a separate post and pics when it is clean, also to come) on Thu 23rd Dec

So I made quiche today with left over ham. So nice to be able to bake again after so long without an oven.

I hope you all had as good a Christmas as I did.

Sewing and Summer

Got some little projects done today - not the Christmas related ones I had planned but.....

A cushion from one of the many vintage tea towels I collected a couple of years back. This one is lovely and bright and was marked 'made in Czechoslovakia', it will live in the 1960's house.

Coat hanger from a kit by Thea & Sami given as a part of the Sew it Together event in Melbourne earlier this year. Thanks Thea, it was so easy to make and I am looking forward to making more now. What a great way to use the ugly wire hangers you get from dry cleaners.

Garden is looking nice with all the rain and the spring flowers. Need to mow AGAIN though......

Caravan doctor

I just came across this cover art for Crowded House's latest best of album. My caravan was taken away yesterday to the caravan doctor to get a new tow bar and stabilisers. When she comes back I can start renovating the interior ready for our first camping adventure in Jan. I am having fun looking for the perfect fabric for curtains and cushions.

It has just started raining - no lawn mowing today, but my roses will get a good soaking.

Today was a good day for sorting fabric and finishing a long-time work in progress. I have had fabric scraps and a doily ready to make into a cushion hanging around in my spare/sewing room for ages. Today I made it!

Some lovely modern macrame owls from Tamara Moynes found via Blanket magazine. I made a macrame owl at school - wonder what happened to it? I can imagine macrame was a bit of a dust catcher back in the 70's.

I missed the last week or so of Blogtoberfest as I had a few days in Melbourne again for work and have just been busy. I had a friend from Sydney visiting last weekend and next weekend is Classic Yass.

We have some friends coming over in their classic cars to enjoy the bands, the cars and the atmosphere. Not sure whether our EK will be ready but if it is I'll have to give it a clean and polish for the weekend. I am sure my camera
will get a workout.

I must also get some photos of my garden that is emerging after the winter hibernation. Roses, daisies, geraniums, pansies - all flowering. Lovely!! On the renovation front, I now have an aerial and therefore television after a year of TV wilderness. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing.... The chimneys have had their loose bricks removed and are ready for the chimney sweep and I have some light fittings waiting to be hung.

I have a few hats. They usually live on top of my wardrobe, in my spare room, on the end of clothes horses..... They aren't looked after very well. Last weekend I decided to think of a way to display them and to keep them in one place out of the way. Two of these ones were my grandmother Minnie's. There are more, but these are the nicest and the ones I don't wear.

While I was at it, I bought a chair into my room to put the pile of 'to read' books on. They were sitting on my bedside table which was getting very full. This was all done last weekend, this weekend was all about gardening and going for a drive in country. I am not keeping up with Blogtoberfest very well.

Not sure if it is due to spring - longer days, warmer weather etc but I am loving life at the moment. Work is infinitely better than it was a few weeks ago, I am getting my kitchen measured up on Monday (yay, I'll have a kitchen soon) and a few things to do with my partner have resolved themselves (which makes me happy).

I also have the spring cleaning bug and tackled the spare room nightmare last night. I really, really want to get rid of a lot of my clutter - it is an ongoing battle, keeping everything, buying new things and not enough storage! It is a toss up between gardening and sewing on weekends from now on and it is nice to have a quiet one ahead of me after being in Melbourne last weekend.

I think I have found a bricklayer to replace the top 10 layers of bricks on my two chimney stacks. Then I can get an aerial fitted (and maybe watch tv for the first time in a year), get the chimney sweep in and seal off the kitchen chimney. Last year when the chimney sweep came I had visitors nesting in my kitchen chimney!

I have been prompted by this post by Bianca Jae to talk about depression. I have read posts from blogs I follow (mainly crafty peeps), mentioning 'happy pills' over the years and gather this is quite common. It is more unusual to read an entire post on the subject. Yay that it is more acceptable and easy to talk about it these days.

I think some level of depression is very common in society today. I come across it a bit at work, in the library sector. Is it just that librarians and crafters are usually a personality type that is more susceptible? I know it is becoming a big issue amongst lawyers and sports people, so I am tempted to say no, it is society wide.

I have been on anti-depressants since my marriage broke down and have recently gone off them. In hindsight the biggest change they made was lower levels of anxiety. I can now talk to groups and present training sessions at work without having a nervous breakdown. Fingers crossed I can still do this without the pills! I still have days where I don't want to get out of bed (and sometimes don't) for no apparent reason. My brother suffers quite badly and my Mum has similar anxiety issues to me.

Suicide hasn't really touched me or my family but an old boyfriend committed suicide when we were in our twenties and I still think of him and his family and wonder why.

There is a great song out at the moment called Dog by Andy Bull featuring Lisa Mitchell - I love it - so true!!

I just wanted to say thank you to those who commented on my post about childlessness. They were all very heartfelt, honest and lovely. Hearing others' stories and views has helped me to move past this stage of my life. It is nice to know there are others out there who have had a similar experience or made the same choice. Sometimes it does feel like you are struggling with issues alone and it is difficult to talk to family and friends who all have an opinion. I love blogland and especially the little crafty community I follow.

I have also been inspired into investigating a macrame project after such encouragement from fellow bloggers. I'll keep you posted!

Smalltown.

I have fond memories of making a macrame owl at school and macrame bookmarks for male relatives. Mum did quite a bit - pot plant hangers etc. I like the way you work the fibre and how it produces something so strong and substantial.

I recently bought an old macrame magazine from my local crafty co-op. I'll dig it up and see if there is anything that could be modernised with an unusual fibre or colour choice.

I am back home, after 4 nights in Melbourne. I haven't blogged since Day 1 - missed day 2 and 3!! Not a good start to Blogtoberfest and daily blogging. I have been mowing lawns and sorting clothes today, spring time. It is still light and I have eaten dinner - yay for daylight savings!!

In Melbourne I attended a conference, saw the Tim Burton exhibition, visited the Ian Potter Centre to see 100 years of Australian Fashion and caught up with Susan for op shopping, food and a chat. It was nice to be in Melbourne, in a hotel and to catch up with colleagues at the conference but I really loved being able to go out for dinner and music on Sat night and more food and op shopping on Sunday. It was good fun and it is great to have so much in common with my fellow Sew it Togetherer.

I am loving being in Melbourne again. Planning to go to the gallery tomorrow, visit some favorite shops and maybe watch the afl in a pub or in my hotel room. It is a bit of a novelty having a tele, watching all sorts of rubbish.

I don't have children

Ok, this is one of those long, potentially boring posts, with lots of words and no pretty pictures, so feel free to ignore if you like. I will try not to sound sorry for myself and you should read this in conjunction with my recent post about how happy I am at the moment.

I write about a part of my life that I have been struggling with for a long, long time and have recently resolved. I am 42 and haven't had children - have never been pregnant. I have tried; I was married once and I tried, he was indifferent and when I wanted to see a specialist he didn't. I have had other relationships and mentioned I would like to have a child one day but never pushed the issue.

I guess it has mainly been the wrong time and place, poor relationship decisions, not making 'having a child' a priority in my life and many other reasons. This year I met a wonderful man who already has two children aged 8 and 15. This time I was honest about my feelings and told him how I have been struggling for the past few years, as my chances of becoming a mother slip away. After much discussion, tears and a trip to the doctor, suddenly we were at an IVF clinic* (not really suddenly - took ages to get an appointment). I was very focused and positive about the whole process even after the doctor gave us about 5% chance for a successful outcome.

Then, after tests to see if I have any eggs left (yes not many but enough), a rubella booster injection and an ultrasound and days before our second appointment with the specialist, I changed my mind. I don't know why and I occasionally panic and wonder if I am letting go for the wrong reasons.

Whatever the reasons, I am comfortable with my decision and now have to face the finality and move on. Travel, more disposable income, possibly fostering.... these must be benefits?

It still hurts when I see mums and bubs out shopping, watch films with baby/pregnancy scenes and find out someone is pregnant (my younger cousins are popping them out at a rate of knots). Maybe this will lessen over time? I love spending time with my God-daughter and my partner's children and I am looking forward to my nieces coming to Australia to live.

To those of you who have experienced the joy of being pregnant, giving birth and raising children, I admire and envy you, even though I know it must be hard sometimes. For others who have chosen not to have children or haven't had them for other reasons, I admire you too. It isn't an easy decision to make or live with in our society.

A sort of before and after shot of my tallboy/dresser. I have this piece of furniture because it was my grandmothers and it lived in her spare room - mine when I stayed over. I don't really like the pine so decided to paint it. It is now white with mint green drawers (I am using up the colours I bought to paint my walls).

I have moved the mirror and small drawers to another room - I like the bare top and need the space. It is missing two handles so I bought a couple from a local heritage shop and have to fit those on next. Now I need hooks on my wall to hang my hat collection!

I did some weeding, listening to the sound of lawn mowing, took advantage of the light and took some pics and generally enjoyed the anticipation of summer. In a recent post where I looked back at the year so far, I mentioned that a response to one or two of my 'plans for 2010' needed their own posts. This is the first one and it relates to my love life. Oh yes, I have one.

I have been married, I have been in long term relationships and they haven't lasted for various reasons. So after my last relationship (the one where I moved to Melbourne from Canberra, bought a house with him and tiptoed around the issue of wanting a baby)*, I had some therapy, read a few self-help books and bought a house in the country.

Lovely. Time to get over wondering what is wrong with me, or men in general and just get on and enjoy life. I have a renovation project, a good job, a gorgeous Goddaughter and nieces and two cats. And free time to make stuff!! In the scheme of things I am VERY lucky!

Then it happened. I met someone!! Almost 8 months now and still very happy! He has two lovely children, so at some point they will become my family (albeit part time).

I was looking into fostering earlier this year but put it on hold when I met man Bloggs (who doesn't blog). I am hoping we will go ahead with fostering, now that I am aware of the desperate need for carers, once we are settled. Man Bloggs also agreed to go through IVF with me to have a baby, but more on that in another post.

*This is the ex who has just (this week) had a baby girl with his new partner. I moved out 13 months ago. No bitterness, he is a lovely guy and I am glad he is happy. I am good friends with his mum. Just hurt a tad.

I had a friend from Sydney visiting on the weekend. As he is a boy I didn't think he'd enjoy walking around the Handmade Market so, we went out to Binalong to this amazing motor museum. The cars were gorgeous and the garage was so lovely it was like being in a gallery. I did take pics of the cars and motorbikes but I was very taken with how organised the garage was and love the old catalogue drawers - all labelled.

We had a (quick) look around Binalong (it isn't very big). I love these old abandoned garages you find in small towns. I would like to buy one and open a business.

Next stop - Crisp Galleries. I have been out there a few times and always love it. The glass, the shop, the gardens.... The weather was lovely. It was fascinating learning about the process of making these sculptural vases.

Organise my life

I am trying to get organised and to spend my time on the things I want to achieve. When much of the day is spent at work or doing chores and other necessities the time that is left over is important. I found this article useful in thinking about how to manage the technology and tools I have gotten into the habit of relying on. I have so many lists and to do's and I don't ever seem to accomplish anything. I think Mindmeister could be useful for getting my head around concepts and I may use it at work.

I am playing along with Susan and looking back at the past week and while I am at it - my year so far.

This week hasn't been great health wise. I have had a stomach thingy for a few weeks now and am waiting for test results to find out what it is and if the doctor can do anything about it. We did buy a lovely car that I am so excited about. And today is the first day of spring!! I have read lots of spring joy posts recently from those in my part of the world. For others I guess you are coming into autumn which I also love.

This is Smudge trying to keep warm in front of the heater. It sort of expresses how I feel at the moment too. I recently started in a new role within the same organisation, at a higher level. I have gone from working alone, self directed and largely unsupervised to managing staff, multiple meetings, constant phone calls and questions and long hours.

At the moment I feel as though I am going through the motions. My alarm goes off at 6am - sometimes I manage to get out of bed, into my freezing bathroom and onto the bus or into the car at around 7am. I get home again around 6 or 7pm and by the time I have cooked dinner, checked e-mails, done a few chores (uh oh it's bin night) I am in bed reading and before I know it another day/week/month is gone.

I am dreaming of owning my own business, working from home, reducing my hours, planning a holiday, spring coming, fixing up my bathroom, doing some exercise..........

On the bright side I have visitors this weekend. My best friend and her daughter (2.9 years old).

My crochet is gradually growing. I ran out of the 3 main wool colours and couldn't replace them in Lincraft so bought a creamy pink colour so I could keep going. I switched colour mid row and thought it would be ok but looking at this pic it isn't. Anyway it will be warm and Ellie likes it.

More booty. Macrame, brings back memories. We made a macrame owl at school, Mum made lots of it, plant holders etc and I made macrame bookmarks for the men (Uncles, Grandfathers etc) at Christmas one year. I don't even know if you can buy macrame twine(?) still.

I also bought this small Waltzing Mathilda book. I love the pictures in it. Lovely!

Sunday crafting with the 14 year old. After we cut out the fabric for the school assignment skirt we each made a heart chain from felt, ribbon and fabric. This is hers. I think it is nicer than mine - great colours, perfect for a 14 year old's room. Excuse the dodgy green cushion background.

Last night we bought a 1950's caravan. This is the best pic taken by the seller. I'll get some better ones when it arrives. So much excitement I can't wait to decorate it. It has been repainted orange on the outside to match the original colour cupboards on the inside. Sleeps 4 so camping here we come - in summer that is.

clearing out

Now that I have simplified my finances I am moving on to other things. I did some rearranging in my kitchen yesterday and cleaned and redid my shelves.

I have had a thing for cream and white ceramics for a while. The idea is to use them as props for a painting. Most of the things above are oppie finds apart from the plate and brass candle holder which were my Grandmothers.

I am sort of over the blue and white china I have been collecting apart from some favourite things now living on this shelf. Some of these are from op shops, some from my Grandmother or gifts from Mum.
So my obsession with Blue Onion china is over and I have to work out a way of getting rid of it (eBay or garage sale).

Not that I have stopped collecting. These are recent buys, the red gold plates were $8 for the set and the pretty patterned one was $2.

On a different note. I saw The Man in Black with Tex Perkins playing Johnny Cash during the week. It was very good, the band was great. But I have to agree with the yellow house in the U it was very cheesy in parts. A bit of attempted humour that wasn't exactly spontaneous I suspect and seemed very very wrong, especially coming from Tex. The Shopping Sherpa was working at the theatre where I collected my tickets from. Canberra is a small, small place.

I love Sundays, I am in bed blogging. Have had breakfast, fed the cats and taken some photos in the morning light but bed is the warmest place to be at the moment. I will have to get up now though as I have a visitor coming to work on an assignment for her textiles class, a skirt. It may inspire me to make something today too!!

Well the sale of my townhouse (ex - home and recently investment property) went through today (yay). I have a cheque to put in my bank account tomorrow and then some bills to pay. As well as getting rid of my credit card debt and car loan, it means I will no longer have to worry about increasing mortgage payments, body corporate, rates and land tax bills and unexpected repairs. Aiming for a simpler life. I may even be able to afford to put some heating and a stove in my little cottage!

Of course now my mind turns to what I can buy myself as a treat. I made a purchase from Inuluxe and I have my eye on these lovely items too:

It's growing

Slowly working on my crocheted rug, trying to keep warm. I know lots of people are cold at the moment (Canberra, Melbourne etc) but MAN -5 degrees this morning and frozen pipes (therefore no shower*). It takes a few hours after I get home to warm my house up enough so that I can't see my breath and I can keep my hands warm.

For some reason I have seen quite a few films recently, mainly on DVD. It's a good weekend activity, heaters on, cats nearby, cup of tea and a knee rug. I am still working my way through the Sopranos series on DVD too. At the movies, I saw Farewell. I enjoyed it and had a free ticket to see it at the Dendy which is always good. A bit of Cold War espionage!!
DVD's - Lovely Bones It is a while since I read it, so can't really compare the film to the book. I thought the acting was very good, especially the 'in between place' scenes - between heaven and earth.
Also watched and enjoyed these: Jules et Jim, Sherlock Holmes, Big Lebowski (love the Coen brother's films).

I have taken up the crochet again. It's not like I don't have 10 other projects already started!! But crocheting is easy to carry around and very soothing I find. So I am just going to keep crocheting one big granny square until it becomes a little lap rug. This photo really does not show the colours which are dusty blue, green and pink.

Back at work today and in my new job in the library, all ready to start a fresh. For another 140 odd creative spaces visit kootoyoo!!

This is an old Hillman car that is for sale in Victoria somewhere. I am thinking about it..... I currently have a 2005 Mitsubishi Outlander which is nice to drive and is a concession to the fact that my drive to work is almost an hour each way, often in the dark and on a pretty bad road. I would much prefer to have my Vespa back or a cute little vintage car to drive around. If I could make myself get up at 6 every morning to catch the bus I probably could get away with it, but it is nice driving to work some days.

I have had another day off work today. I have had a headache most of the week, building up to the killer I have today. I get headaches from holding tension in my shoulders which affects my neck and back muscles. I think it is a combination of stress and sitting at a desk all day using a computer. I am also trying to go off my 'happy pills' at the moment and finding it is making me feel dizzy, headachy and a bit sick.

After sleeping on and off today and finishing the book I was reading "The secret like of bees" by Sue Kidd Monk, I have started crocheting again. I think it will be a blankie.

weekend work

These are the results of my creative weekend. I think I made this on Friday night. A heart hanging thing from felt, ribbon and fabric in red black and white. Scraps from my quilt fabrics.

Sunday I made curtains for my bedroom (pics to follow when washed, ironed and hung) and this cushion from Ink&Spindle fabric I bought on the SiT Melbourne trip.

I also love that my cats got this close to each other (rare these days)! Cold weather is time for snuggling!

Saturday was cold and windy but Sunday was lovely and warm so I got out into the garden. I accidentally chopped my mysterious (sprung up from nowhere) sweet pea off as I was pruning the dead bits of a geranium :-( So I put some of it in a vase with a bunch of Daphne.

Ah the joys of a weekend at home. I am not doing any cleaning apart from washing and the general dishes etc this weekend. I want to make stuff!! I made a good start on Fri night with some felt hearts and a few quilt blocks sewn together.

These are the things I bought from Canberra Handmade Shop with some of the money I got for my birthday. A camera strap by allana C., earings by Tango & James, Lavender Russian doll by Plushka and a soap. The necklace was from my parents. Have been meaning to post these for a while.

I went to Ikea while in Sydney last weekend and bought two lots of fabric - could have gone mad in there!!

Here is the dishcloth I was knitting at Sew it Together in Melbourne. Looks like an old rag and I haven't even used it yet.

and this was my creative space last night, cutting fabric for my quilt and playing around with felt.

This is the little double-decker coffee table I found in Holbrook. It matches the bookshelf we got from the same place. I love a bargain! So this room is coming together, it is quite nice to sit in on the weekends when the heater has been on for a while. Only the kitchen and the sunroom get full sun and warm up naturally.

I noticed one of my favourite local shops is moving soon AND they now have a website. If you are in Canberra and fancy a drive or are en route between Sydney and Melbourne, visit Petite & Belle. Very cute things for little people!!

I have had a pretty stressful week and to top it off went to work today sans spectacles, mobile phone and home keys. Luckily my neighbour was around with a torch and a child small enough to get in my bathroom window, when I got home tonight in the dark. I didn't tell them about the redback I found near the window sill later this evening......
